How do sparks of interest in a specific field ignite? How does art history teach a deeper appreciation of human creativity? In this episode, accomplished art historian Alice Sullivan gives a taste of her field and delves into the visual history of Eastern Europe.

Alice Isabella Sullivan holds a BA from Bowdoin College, an MA in art history from Williams College, and completed her PhD at the University of Michigan. She is a historian of medieval art, architecture, and visual culture, specializing in the artistic production of Eastern Europe and the Byzantine-Slavic cultural spheres between the 14th and 16th centuries. Among her peer-reviewed academic publications, she has award-winning articles, and recently a co-edited book published with Brill. In 2018, Alice co-founded the initiative titled North of Byzantium (www.northofbyzantium.org) – which explores the rich medieval history, art, and culture of the northern frontiers of the Byzantine Empire in Eastern Europe. She is now working on several other books in the field of art history, and is co-directing a new interactive website titled Mapping Eastern Europe.
